Lena Horne - Activist, Singer, Actress
Born: June 30th, 1917
Died: May 9th 2010


Lena Horne was extremely involved in the Civil Rights Movement from the 1930's to the 1960's and she constantly stood for what she believed in.
Horne never took a role that she felt expressed the "stereotypical black woman" and while out touring she began suing venues for any racial discrimination she had experienced. She participated in many NAACP rallies, and even took part in the March on Washington in 1963.

  • She was born and raised in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.
  • She was blacklisted in Hollywood during the 1940's because of her demand for equality.
  • At the age of 16, she became a dancer in Harlem's Cotton Club.
